Some of the committee members will be traveling down to Aberdeen on Wednesday nights boat to meet the visiting acts, returning on Thursday nights boat and arriving back in Shetland on friday morning - with several hangovers no doubt!

Unfortunately Jamieson's Big Pockets - a very popular local act - has had to pull out due to the singer having a throat infection. Jeanni Cioffi will be playing on Sunday night at the Lerwick British Legion in their place, so it's another chance to see this highly talented performer.

Jimmy Carlyle has produced a podcast for the festival, with some tracks, interviews and reviews of the artistes. You can get it directly from iTunes (do a search for Shetland Blues) or visit his website.

Ticket sales are very good so far, so if you don't want to miss out on any of the pay gigs make sure you get your tickets soon. See you all at the weekend!

Press Release!

<dc:subject>News</dc:subject>

Yes it’s nearly that time of year again, when the summer sun shines down (almost 24hrs of the day) on the most Northerly Blues Festival in the UK, providing a truly unique atmosphere for artistes and visitors alike. Coinciding with the Johnsmas Foy – Shetland’s summer festival – our beautiful isles are most certainly in for a bluesy treat!

This year the organising committee are delighted to welcome acts from America, Norway, Mainland Scotland and England, not to mention some exceptional talent from Orkney and Shetland too.... Led by the hugely talented Al Hughes, they have mixed, and more than held their own alongside some of the greats in British Blues like Dr Feelgood, Status Quo, Nazareth and Wishbone Ash. The band will be appearing in both Bressay and Lerwick during the weekend, as well as on the Victoria Pier during Saturday afternoon, alongside another Scottish act - Blues On Tap. This 5-piece Blues/Rock powerhouse thrive on the live stage and with their Shetland connections, the committee are delighted to offer them a spot at the Festival.

...This five-piece band released their first live CD in 1994, followed by the release of “Blue Shoe” in 2001. With their combination of luscious drums, thriving organ and piano, whipping bass, genuine blues guitar alongside the powerful vocals of German vocalist, Oliver Weers, the band have developed a very special sound that has taken them to festivals and gigs the length and breadth of Norway (and now over the North Sea to Shetland!)

...This varies greatly depending on the venue he’s playing, so you may hear soft, bluesy ballads and folkish stories to raucous renditions of Voodoo Chile, Mystery Train and others with a degree more power than you'd ever expect.

Jeanni Cioffi an American singer/songwriter/violinist is also making a welcomed stop off at this year’s Festival. Usually part of a 3 piece called Shell, Jeanni has definite Bluegrass and Jazz influences, which will no doubt go down a storm in Shetland.

This year’s event sees the addition of some talent from our closest neighbours Orkney. Since going down a storm at last year’s Orkney Blues Festival Leah Seator and SAS Blues have been receiving praise wherever they play. As predicted by Dave The Bishop Scott from Blues Matters Magazine “Local journalist Leah had better start getting used to making the headlines rather than writing them……..because she has the talent to make it to the top or wherever she wants to be.” Joining them from Orkney are 4 Piece Mean Business who have a reputation of giving it “their all” and really get the party going. They instinctively know what the audience want to hear and their versatility means it is delivered in style.

However, no Shetland Blues Festival would or could be a success without the addition and quality of our local acts. Shetland is blessed with abundance of musical talent and at the time of going to Press, as many as nine local acts are on the line-up. As well as the Granddaddy’s of the Shetland music scene - No Sweat and the Rumshack Blues Band - the rather more youthful Jamieson’s Big Pockets and Two Pot Screamers will also be making us dance our summer socks off! Other Shetland acts making their debut Blues Festival appearances include Firebird, The Donald Anderson Band, Bitumen River, CaveDwellers and BlueMelt.
